Fund the People Defund Keene Police

The past year has been a resurgence of our national reckoning with racist and classist policing. In order to protect Black lives, our houseless neighbors, working-class families, and people battling drug addiction and other mental health challenges, we must lower the police budget and use that money to fund social services, affordable housing, and community mental health support.

You may be horrified by the police’s anti-Black violence across the country, but you still may be asking yourself, do we really have a police problem in Keene? The answer is yes. Just last year Keene Police brutalized Khady and Tyler, two young Black Keene State students, in an act of racist violence. Khady was sick and needed privacy, not a beating. Additionally, police routinely arrest people who are experiencing homelessness, addiction, or mental health crisis instead of sending trained mental health professionals and peer supporters. People in crisis need support that police are not the best people to give.
